Okay- This is Thyra (I might change the name) one of the main characters that won't exist till the end XD “I guess I should start from the beginning, shouldn’t I? In my kingdom, the more children you have the more powerful you are… obviously you don’t become the king if you have fifty sons and daughters, but the more sons the more workers you had that could marry women, spread the family genes, and the more reputation you got, the more daughters you had the more money you got when they were married off, and they would spread the family blood, but a daughter would only grow into a woman, so we don’t give much reputation… at least not good reputation. My father was a farmer, my mother a butchers daughter… neither came from very large families, and most of their siblings died of starvation or sickness, but both wanted to have a large family, to gain power, but to do that, you needed a son, as many sons as possible really. My parents had eight daughters before I was born, and finally, their ninth child, was a son. My parents thought that he was a sign and had me as soon as possible… except… well… I’m a girl. From the moment I was born my father hated me, cursed me. Even my sisters didn’t like me much, which I didn’t understand. My brother was being spoiled and treated like a prince while we were treated almost as worse as the swine my father sold. By the time I was nine, all my sisters were married off and all had daughters of their own, and were getting more. My father wanted to send my brother to a school, so he could bring more power to the family, but as a farmer he couldn’t afford to send my brother there. Had he married me to some stranger he would have had the funds, but my sisters had only had daughters and slowly my family was seen as cursed to only have women. So besides selling me in marriage, he sold me as a slave. I’ve been paraded through hundreds of cities, working for this master and that for a slice of bread and dirty water for six years. Had my father known how much I sold for when I grew into my skin, he’d have kept me longer for sure. I think my mother was the only one who missed me… She was wiping at her eyes when I was taken away, though the day had been dry and windy, so maybe she just got some sand in her eyes. I don’t really care now. I just hope my family learns about my gifts. I hope they learn and regret ever spurning me. Gods, I might even go back to my village and show them what I can do.” |
