The goal is to gain more mush than you have spent on pottery if you chose to buy some. I usually stop when I know I won't break even, and just wait for the countdown so I don't lose mush (:

Once you get past 40 enemies a map, investing in Chinese pottery becomes feasible. That's around level 15-25. Once hitting 30-40 that's where the real profit starts rolling in
