the only advice that i can really offer is
- dont shade with black
- dont shade with an airbrush, shadows have hard edges too
- the colour of the shadows will be the opposite colour of the light source
- and this thing -Click-
its a bad example but i think it gets the point across

totally understandable its so much more enjoyable when youre just doing whatever you want
also i have a friend who draws with a mouse and her art is absolutely gorgeous so you can definitely get really good with a mouse
