The chill of the wind ruffled through her fur as she pressed ashen pelt against the red brute next to her. Soft, heterochromia gaze lingered outside of the cave watching the mist seep off the waterfall. "Be careful love," A voice drew her back to reality as she felt a gentle nuzzle to her stomach. "for both you and our pups."
Smiling she affectionately rasped her tongue over the brindle male's cheek. "Have no worries, you know I know these lands with my eyes closed." Nuzzling against the tuft of fur on his chest, Maylin pulled back to blink at her mate. Turning slowly she headed to the cave's entrance and Riem watched his mate slip from his vision.
The chill bit at her paws as she treaded over the snow-blanketed lands. The soft fog rose from her muzzle with each breath as she continued along. Moving along the territory borders, she placed scent markers before continuing on. It was a simple task, but covering the whole area assigned would take some time.
The sound of a creature whimpering caught her attention. Ears perked as she tentatively followed the sound, down a soft slope covered with tree roots. Huddled among the dying brush as a bear cub, it's black eyes locking onto Maylin's fearful. The sentry was torn, she knew how dangerous bears were; especially angered mothers. She could scent no blood.. deciding the mother would return soon enough she quickly turned to climb back up the slope.
A towering, dark brown figure stood ontop of the bank however, a enraged roar bellowing from it's it's throat. The bear took no time at all running after the wolf that was now fleeing. With the advantage of being on high ground the bear easily closed upon her. A large paw swatted at her and Maylin was knocked off her feet, skidding onto the ground.
Mis-matched gaze bored into the bear as she snarled. "I'm not here to hurt your cub!" Whether the bear couldn't understand or paid no attention was unknown as it smacked at again. Claws raked over her side, spilling crimson onto the frozen ground as the wolf struggled to try to stand.
As she felt fangs pierce flesh along her spine and was lifted off the ground, Maylin sobbed. "P-please just let me go!" I wont e-ever return I s-swe-" The words were interrupted by a strangled yowl as immense pain washed over the female. A sickening snap echoed in her ears as tears rolled down her cheeks. Being tossed to the ground, Maylin watched mortified as the large creature loomed above her.
"I'm s-sorry.." She whined between strained breathes as she curled her tail to her abdomen. "Y-you did n-not.. get to even s-ee the world yet.. my loves. Her vision began to fade as the bear padded away; leaving her alone on the stained snow.
As the world began to darken around the edge Maylin watched as the snow began to fall, twirling softly in the air. "T-the world is a beautiful... y-yet cruel- place. If only you c-could.. see it." With a shudder she breathed her last, the sound of her pack's pawsteps the last thing she'd ever hear.
