Biography Lumi was born and raised in Chukotka, Russia. She lived with the Chukchi people, an indigenous community who traditionally herded reindeer and hunted sea mammals. Nowadays, this lifestyle is becoming increasingly uncommon after modernization of the region. However, Lumi was raised with a traditional family and was tasked with herding caribou, assisting with hunting, and of course pulling sleds. During the summertime, Lumi and the rest of the village dogs would be free to roam the forests until autumn. It was liberating— but not without its dangers. Some dogs often succumbed to disease, wolf attacks (dogs were considered rivals by the wolves), or even dog fights. The dogs who returned by autumn were considered to be the strongest and best dogs. Although Lumi lived a very traditional life, her owner (an older man with many, many years of wisdom), decided to enroll her into a small, local dog show to showcase the ideal “Chukchi Siberian dog”— a lineage of Siberian husky completely untouched by westerners. After Lumi performed well in dog shows, she began to compete nationally across Russia, and even international in places like Norway, Finland, and Estonia, where Lumi earned a Grand Champion title.
