“Mom, why does Shiro have stripes?”
The gray-furred she-wolf nudged her son away from the other pup. “She’s different.”
“But none of us have stripes!”
“Shush.”
Shirogane blinked up at her mother. “I don’t wanna be different.”
The she-wolf’s gentle demeanour changed almost instantly. “Shut up.” The pup flinched, and the she-wolf continued. “Don’t talk to me, you’re just like your father.”

“Get out!” the she-wolf snarled. “Get out and don’t come back!” Blood dripping from her left eye and her mother’s parting words echoing in her mind, Shirogane stumbled away, into the unknown darkness of unexplored territory.
“Eme, look!” Shirogane shrunk back into the bushes, growling, as a human stared down at her. “It’s a wolf, and she’s hurt.”
"DonÂ’t come any closer," she snapped internally. But the human reached over and clamped something around her muzzle.
“C’mon, we’ll get your eye treated.” She didn’t have the strength to resist as the human took her away, her limp form curled in the human’s arms.

“I don’t think she’ll see again, Rue,” another human said. “Not out of that eye. Whatever did that to her has ruined it beyond repair.”
“God.” The first human sighed, then unclipped the tag from her left ear, replacing it instead with a couple feathers from a blue jay. “You’re free to go now, wolf.” The human picked her up, then brought her to the forest behind their rescue center. “Take care.” And it disappeared inside.
Shirogane stared after it, then turned and plunged into the cool greenery of the forest. "Thank you, human."
“Who goes there?” a voice growled, and a cream wolf slid out from the shadows. He stared down at her, sniffing the air. “Where did you come from?”
Goddess. She’d gone right past a pack’s border without realizing. “I’m a lone wolf,” she responded, forcing her voice not to tremble.
“You smell of humans.” The male circled her, eyeing the jay feathers on her ear. “Where’d you get those?”
“I was hurt. They treated me.” She studied the male, whose brown, stripe-like markings were not unlike her white ones, then mustered the courage to ask, “Don’t others make fun of your markings?”
The male stared quizzically at her. “No.”
She shifted her paws. “My old pack threw me out because of my marks. They said I was different. I didn’t belong.”
“That’s a very lame reason.” He turned. “Come back to my pack with me. We’ll see if the Alphas will let you stay.” He didn’t wait for a response. He just ran.
“O-okay-?” She bounded after him, racing to keep up with the older male.
Soon enough, they reached the pack dens. “We’re called Sabercrest,” the male told her. “I’m Raijin. I was told my mother named me after a thunder god. The Alphas are in there, I’ll go speak to them with you.”

A few days later, Shirogane was dozing in the den she shared with another female called Shima, when Raijin, who was apparently the Beta, poked his head in. “Asaka and I are going hunting with Marsh. Do you want to come?” She got to her paws, dipped her head in acknowledgement, and followed him out. No, she didn’t have a crush on Raijin – everyone knew his heart lay with Asaka – he was more like a brother. Which led her to wonder: What happened to her actual brother?
