Warm purples and soft pinks swirled into a midnight blue sky. Liquid silver stars decorating a cloudy night. Twinkling down on an untamed grassy field, blades reaching their winding arms high into the smoky night.
A forest smelling of charcoal and thick, suffocating, smoke.
An oak forest feeding a fire seventy feet high. Red and orange flames burning the night.
A mama wolf's panicked mismatched eyes staring at a litter of newborn pups. A babe white as milk, a pup brown as dirt, a wolf black as ink. She couldn't save them all.
Only one could fit in her mouth as she fled from the fire. Only one could live.
One pup was smaller than the other two, lighter, easier to carry into the night. She would have to take him. She grabbed him, tears dripping down her black muzzle and onto the ashy ground below. One step after another accompanied by crippling pain in her heart.
A whimper escaped her as she ran with him in her mouth, toward freedom, toward safety, away from her pups.
Her paws catching on wild grass, her gaze captured by silver stars. And her pups, their souls joining that purple and pink night sky.
