Excuse the messiness, but I'd do it something like this.
Lots of lil triangle [ish] shapes that get larger towards the back and then smaller as it gets closer to the tail again.
Just little triangles with a line down the middle.

1-2 apples for a simple

2-4 apples for a medium

4-6 apples for a hard

6-10 apples for a complex piece
