I wasn't really gotten critical of mary sues until this thread. Now I can smell that mary sue, and they are harder to deal with. I can still swallow my annoyance and move on, but it's like my eyes have been opened.

I will go through and read a few of my old 1x1's. Mainly a story-like thread in particular. If I do get really, really bored I will go through and read other 1x1's. ... if they look good. ----- the problem with Mary Sues / Gary Larry / etc. is there's so many of them. And a lot of them have kinda turned toward the "my character is an asshole because of their background which is sad and blah blah blah" ... Every character, I swear. Is that.

For me, the thing with Mary / Gary-Sues whom have these angst filled pasts. Is that I genuinely don't care about what they've gone through, as mean as that sounds. But I just don't find them to be likable, and because of this I have a difficult time getting attached to the character this person has made. Then some people have their character who falls flat on their face into the trope, bring it up more times than necessary. >_<

I started RPing actually pretty recently, when I think about it - really maybe fall of last year? Winter? And I have made some terrible Mary/Gary sues, looking back. It's my goal to never have a sue ever again :') Or an edgy Eloise.

If I think my character is beginning to become a Mary Sue I'll try to add some bad quality about them, though I tend to lean more of them being bitches or being gentle. ;-;

Same. This club has open my eyes wider to the trope, but I think none of your current OCs are Sues. :) Sleepless Nights said: i am constantly worried that one of my oc's is a mary sue or gary sue

my favorite way to avoid a mary sue character is some big twist in their personality though that is becoming a big trope of mine Pudding Cup said: Same. To avoid making a bunch of hourglass figured females, I do recommend looking into the other various figures. Men actually have their own body figures as well, so that is worth looking at when making humanoid OCs.
