I haven't seen any mention of this anywhere - but is there an age where the wolves are too old to breed?

no but wolves can die at age 15 and over so if you do breed your wolves once old then best about four days before death day and if pregnant when female dies then you don't get the pups. Wolves can keep breeding until they die.
