His hand stilled at her request, eyes lifting up towards her face. Except their were halted by the shiny metal around her neck. His breathing hitched, his hand lifting for a second. Lips opening to speak and then he was struck into the stomach. He doubled over, grunting, hands flying to his midsection. His eyes blown wide, the pain was there but hardly present in his mind. There's no possibility. It's stolen. Deryn's head snapped up as she began to call out for help. She was writhing just ahead of him.

Silvesse threw her head back in frustration, slamming a paw down onto the earth beside them. Would you stop her screaming? It is irritating. The female, slashed her tail, striking a tree without flinching. The oak creaked and groaned, a heavy dent in the side. Deryn didn't even glance in his dragons direction, much to her dismay. Her eyes wided and the pupils snapped into slits. Are you listening?! She seethed. Absolutely not.

He reached forwards, hand landing beside her. He scrambled to get back on top of her. His free hand moving to lift the goggles up to sit on top of his head, scrunching up the hair. Dirt marred the skin beneath in dusty splotches. Deryn grasped at her arms as she tried to grip the roots of the trees. He needed to look again. He didn't believe himself.

Deryn fought to twist the woman back towards him, his brown eyes flashing with recognition. His heart dropped. This...This was bad. Conflicting emtions made his chest rise and fall rapidly as he stared down at her. She was still struggling and she was doing it well.

Silvesse watched from beside them, bewildered by her rider's actions. What was he doing? He was never this sloppy. That's why she picked him.

"Would you just," He grunted, losing grip on her arm. "Good Gods, please just," Deryn flinched as a stray arm almost clocked him on the temple. "Would you stop!" He raised his voice, overwhelmed. His chest still heaving, he regained his hold on her arm. He reached back for his rope, still battling her, he began to tie her wrists together. If successful, he would move to her legs. He couldn't let them know he cared about her.

She could get away, she knew she could if she just pushed a bit more. Her golden hair now covered in dirt and grime, her clean fingernails digging into the soil. Her dress ruined by the debris below her as sticks and roots pulled at the seams. The dragon had not seemed to make a move to kill her, maybe she was commanded not to, so she used the opportunity to run. Her tired arms pulled her up over a root just as the dragon's tail slashed against the oak tree. Adalia paused, covering her head with her arms, as bark shot through the air, the tree groaning as it began to bend.

Adalia was covering quite the ground before she felt the grip of the man on her skin once again. “Get off!” She growled, trying to thrash her body from his grip. The slick soil below made it impossible to gain traction. The man used his legs to scramble on top of her once more, his sheer weight and size holding the upperhand. Adalia fought against each twist and thrash but her body was growing weak, she was not used to this much stamina drain. Her breath was ragged as she clawed at the man, paying no mind to his now visible face.

She was in a fight or flight mindset, her hands thrashing as her palm collided with his cheek, a sharp slap emitting through the air. “Let me Go!” She screamed, as her slick skin began to loosen from his grip. In her mind she continued to encourage herself, pushing herself to the limits to reach freedom. She was almost there, her body sliding from under his form.

“Would you stop!” The man said, a cold chill shooting down the spine of the girl below. Her body stopped thrashing as her wide, blue orbs looked up to the bare face before her. She couldn’t recognize him at the moment, hell the last time she had seen her old friend was when they were small babes. Her brows furrowed as he grabbed her wrist to keep her from hitting him, the man’s chest heaving as he looked down to the familiar face.

“Don't you dare!” She said through struggling breaths as he pulled his rope out to restrain her. Of course she did not give an easy fight. It took a few moments of her eyes scanning his features. His eyes, she could see his eyes now with the slight flicker of flames. “Deryn….” She said almost silently as her body stiffened. Was it true? Was this her old friend before her, with a dragon… “Get off of me” she finally said, using the little strength she had left to push his body from hers. “What in the Good Gods are you doing? Rampaging?” She spat, her soft eyes filled with rage. “I thought you were bloody dead!”

Deryn struggled with the restaints, she was moving too much and her skin was sloughed with mud and grime. Then she stilled and he frantically tried to wrap the rope around her wrists, it couldn't be loose they'd know. Why couldn't this have been a simple hit and run. He gritted his teeth beneath the bandana. Hurry it up! Silvesse growled. Your group is finishing. Indeed, he glanced up, jaw setting. They were picking through the ruins, sliding anything of worth into their satchels and onto their dragons. Then the woman began to move and talk again.

His eyes shot down to her once more and he saw her lips move. You're kidding. After a brief moment of stillness, he narrowed his eyes as she tried to push him away.

"I don't know what you're talking about." He muttered, hands flying to hold her wrists again. She was tiring, painfully obviously tiring. "Just come with me." Deryn glanced over towards Silvesse who was approaching, she lowered herself to the ground.

"Just keep quiet and you'll be fine. They won't hurt you." He took one more glance towards her face before he quickly rose to his feet. Dirt marking his clothes from their scramble. Deryn reached down and grasped her by the torso and lifted her from the floor. Looking straight ahead, he moved to lift her onto Silvesse.

"Do not talk. Do not scream. Do not as questions." Deryn kept his voice as calm as he could but his chest was still heaving, an overwhelming panic encircling him. Her parents had enough money to pay a ransom, in days she would be back safe with her family and away from him. About time. Silvesse quipped.

As he was lifting Ada onto the beast's saddle, he heard the crunch of footsteps descending upon them. A slight peek over his shoulder confirmed that three of his group were within earshot.

"My days, Pyro. Would you hurry it up?" A woman with red hair threw her hands in the air, then gestured to the woman. "Didn't think you'd be bested by some pampered princess." She snickered, her companions joing in.

"Shut it, Fury." Deryn snapped back, an almost growl. He looked back up at Adalia, his eyes pleading that she would do as he said.

Adalia continued to struggle against the restraints, now that she knew who this man was. “Deryn, I know it's you!” She said through gritted teeth, “Why are you doing this?” She questioned as he tied her legs. “No, Let me go” She said as Deryn lifted the woman from the mud she laid in. “Deryn we used to be friends, you ran away as a child without a word, how could you be doing this?” She questioned as he swiftly grabbed her torso, lifting her onto the back of the beast before her.

“No no no!” She said sharply, “Do not put me on this beast! The thing tried to kill me!” She demanded, trying to squirm from his grip but he was too strong. Adalia looked down to the beast, its scales still hot from the fire that erupted from its body. She was terrified, never in the years alive did she think she would actually encounter a dragon. She felt as if she was about to fall, the beast's steady breathing rocking the saddle slightly. She had no way to balance herself. She looked to Deryn as he warned her, she could still hear the panic in his voice as he hid behind a fake facade of calm. “I will not listen to you” She said, “Not after all of this”

Adalia too looked up as she heard the others nearing, her brows furrowing as they came into view. Just great. She heard a woman’s voice, watching as the red head neared. Her jab at the princess only caused her temper to flare dangerously. “Give me a fair fight and I can best you too” Adalia snapped, her words sharp. She did not care of the warning Deryn had given her, at this point she did not care whatever the man said. He was a traitor.

“You and your beasts will all pay the price once my family hears of your treason to the Kingdom.” She said, her eyes giving a deadly glare. She then looked to Deryn, “Especially you.” She kept her hard exterior, but deep inside it felt like a knife to her gut. This man used to be her greatest friend in the realm, they had been so close. One day he was gone and she was heartbroken, her family played it off as he died so she could get over the sorrow and grow in her studies. And now to see him face to face after all these years, the knife twisted deep within.

Deryn's eyes widened and a choked sound came from him as Adalia bit back to Fury. His head spinning to glare at her, did this woman have a death wish? Fury stormed up towards Deryn's side, eyes blazing with animosity. Her hand landing on Deryn's shoulder, she was decently tall but still a few inches shorter than him

"You watch your tongue, princess." Her eyes narrowed. "You're only worth the pretty pennies your parents will dish out to us, your incessant blabbering is not needed." She leaned in closer to Deryn. "And you," She raised a finger and proded at his chest. "What did you do to her that warrents that threat, huh?" Her voice lighter now her attention was away from Ada.

"I didn't do anything. Just roughed her up a little, she was trying to run." Deryn shrugged, glancing over his shoulder at Adalia. His eyes glinting in the remains of the fire ahead of them. Fury narrowed her eyes for a moment before she cracked a smile, leaning in closer to him, up on her toes.

"I'm just glad you got her. We can sell her off and be set for months. Well done, handsome." She pressed her lips to his cheek, one hand slid across his chest before she pulled away, fingers lingering. Deryn kept his head turned, eyes locked on Adalia.

Fury snapped her attention back to the others. "Well! Come on! Let's get out of here before more of these idiots show up." She raised a hand and waved it, a grey dragon descending before her. The others followed behind her, signalling to their own beasts.

Silvesse kept still, only her eyes flitted down to her rider once he began to ascend her leg. Deryn's eyes were hard, face set with no emotion. He twisted, moving Ada to sit in front of him. He wasn't going to trust her to not throw herself off the side of Silvesse mid-flight. He sat her between his legs.

"Don't move, you'll slip." Deryn mumbled beside her. His arms reaching around the sides of her to grip the saddle. Do not scare her. He warned Silvesse, only earning an annoyed huff as the female beat her wings, lifting them skyward.

Anyone who knew the Princess truly knew the spitfire she was. She was not one to go down without a fight, whether it be physical or verbal. It was a fatal flaw of her own well being but through these years nothing had changed. Her mother hated it very much so, finding it unladylike, her father…he knew he must correct her for it but he couldn’t hide the fact he was proud, she was not one to let others take control of her and undermine her. So when the woman warned her of her tongue, Adalia did what she was known best for.
She watched as the woman now spoke directly to Deryn, a smile gracing her lips as she leant close to him. Her lips pressed against his cheek, her fingers lingering against the leather of his chest. Something deep within that had been hidden for so long scratched at the surface of that sight. But it was quickly kicked away. There was nothing left that she felt towards that man, that was no longer her friend. He was an enemy.
I will speak however I please you wench”, the Princess’s once elegant tone filled with fire and hatred called out as Fury began to move off. Her blue eyes glistened against the flames that swirled in the background, brows furrowed sharply like a dagger. “Didn’t do anything? You know what…” Adalia began, about to ruin his secret of knowing who his prisoner was. But before the final words could leave her lips, Silvesse shifted. Adalia instantly silenced, grasping to the saddle as she tried to catch her balance. "You cursed creature." Adalia muttered to herself as she settled, looking back to her captors.
Adalia’s attention and gaze was finally pulled away from the woman who climbed atop her beast, moving with the others towards the sky. Deryn soon followed suit as he climbed upon his companion, settling with ease. He moved Adalia to sit in front of his form, her restrained hands scrambled for anything to hold onto before her. What should she grab? The saddle? The beast?
“Get me off of this beast immediately!” She almost begged, hands grasping to the leather of the saddle. Even as his arms slipped around her and his legs sat against her own, the shifting of the dragon had begun to throw her balance. Silvesse extended her wings, lifting her form into the sky only to gain a terrified gasp to leave Adalia’s lips. It was as if no air or sound could leave her chest, her knuckles turning white and eyes shutting tightly.
“No, no, no no” She muttered to herself as she felt the three lift into the sky, the sounds of the crackling flames dissipating. Her form almost trembled as they gained altitude, each beat of the creature’s wings rattling her balance. “I am going to die upon some giant bat” She murmured again, refusing to open her eyes and look at the skies before them.
Finally they had reached a soaring altitude, Silvesse’s wings spread open as they soared across the open skies. Adalia’s balance slightly returned but she still held her deathly tight grip to the saddle. Her head faced down, golden curls falling around her face, softly shifting in the winds. “Deryn, so help the gods, get me on the ground now. I am going to fall to my death if we continue.” Adalia spoke, her voice hushed between teeth. Adalia had always been curious to see these creatures in person, to fly the skies, but now having been in the moment, she began to regret every single thought she ever had.

His hand lifted to pull the riding goggles back into place, they fit snug against the high bridge of his nose, the dark glass obscuring his eyes from the outside world. In front of him, his prisoner was squirming at the unfamiliar sensation of being lifted high into the night sky. It was obvious in the way Silvesse twitched her ears that the woman’s complaining was beginning to wear on already thin ice, the dragon was behaving for now, but Deryn didn’t have any true control over the beast. Silvesse merely assisted him and if he asked her to do something she didn’t want to then she would certainly do the opposite.

The snap of wings finally subsided and the ride lulled into a more peaceful pace, riding along the currents of air rather than forcing their way through them. Ahead of them several other dragons of varying colours and sizes were gliding through the night sky with ease, Deryn thought it looked beautiful but he was sure Ada thought the opposite. If her minute shaking was anything to go off of, that is.

Cutting through the steady sound of air rushing past his ears was the lilting voice of the woman in front of him. Deryn dipped his chin down to look at her, but all he could truly see was the hair being blown about in the high winds. He was sure his own mop of hair was streaking behind him as well, but the ends of hers were licking at his neck. He didn’t speak a word to her, he was sure it would result in some form of reprimand from Adalia.

Instead, he unfurled his fingers from the front of the saddle, keeping one in place as he moved the other towards her. Pushing his hand onto her opposite shoulder and pulling her flush against his chest in a sort of make-shift seat belt. It wouldn’t truly make her any safer, but it would at least feel like it. Deryn angled his legs a hint more inwards, making Adalia’s legs press into Silvesse that little bit more.

He kept himself as steady as possible, unwilling to make Silvesse annoyed to the point of taking an impromptu dive downwards just to listen to the woman squeal. Thankfully, his dragon remained calm the entire flight, her wing beats were smooth and she followed closely behind Fury and her companion. Only when they began to approach their lair did the red-headed woman look over her shoulder to Deryn. He was sure beneath her scarf mask and goggles she had a twitch of annoyance at the position he was in with Adalia, but it didn’t show as she flicked her arm out and gave a quick gesture.

Begrudgingly, Deryn retracted his arm which had been in place for well over half an hour now and moved to his own hip. He produced a ribbon of dark fabric, letting go of the saddle completely now, he leaned his torso backwards. This took away most of the support he was giving Ada, but he needed both of his hands for this part.

“Do what they say,” He finally spoke, keeping up his facade of harshness only to let himself bleed into the next word. “Please.” With that, Deryn flipped the fabric over Adalia’s eyes and tied it behind her head, ensuring that she couldn’t see where they were about to dive into. He gripped the front of the saddle again, he needed to now or else he would come flying off too. He squashed his legs into Ada’s and hunched himself over her in an attempt to secure her a little more.

“Don’t let go.” He gave the warning a few heartbeats before Silvesse let out a shrill noise and snapped her wings into her body, taking a nose dive. The air rushed past his head like he was navigating through a tornado as Silvesse took all the twists and turns required to reach their lair. Some of it was to disorient their captive, but most of it was needed in order to weave through the rock spires and cliff faces of the mountain range. The torment only came to an end as Silvesse latched onto the edge of a slate ledge, clambering her way up as other dragons mimicked her on either side.

After what seemed like many of Adalia’s complaints and pleas, she felt Deryn press his hand against her shoulder, crossing over and holding her snug. The act itself made her want to smack him in all honesty, pulling her form closer, but she couldn’t lie that it helped with the wobbly feeling that she may fall off and to her death. Enough as well that further into the flight, Adalia took the risk to peek with just one eye.

She caught a glimpse of the others before them, but it was too dark to see much else. Her grasp tightened as she opened her other eye, watching the beast they rode upon glide through the air. Her head bobbed with each beat, her ears twitching as she listened to her riders and the others in front. Her heart pounded hard against her chest, her stomach twisting and turning, knowing that a slight glance below would have her hurling her dinner.

Adalia’s eyes could faintly see Fury before them who gave them a glance before gesturing her arm. A gut feeling churning in Adalia knowing something was coming. She was right, for a moment later Deryn pulled away the only safety Adalia had. Her grip tightened upon the saddle, knuckles white as her breath caught in her throat.
“What are you doing?” She questioned quickly, panic lacing her voice as he leaned back.

Do what they say, Please” He spoke, his voice fading from harshness to almost a plea.”
He raised his hands to pull the dark fabric over her eyes, blinding her.

“Deryn! Stop it!” She said, starting to reach up. It was almost as if Silvesse was listening, for she adjusted her angle, causing Adalia to instantly reach back down. “Deryn, what is going on?” She questioned, right as he pressed his body against her own, pushing his legs tight.
Don’t let go.

With that they plummeted down, Adalia’s breath being taken away. It was only for a few seconds though, before she finally was able to let a scream escape. She leaned forward and wrapped her arms around the beast, fingers grasping to anything she could. This was surely the end. The air rushed against her screams, voice growing dry until she was silent, accepting the fate that she was plummeting towards the ground to her death.

Each twist and turn tossed her stomach about, and beneath her eye covering, tears bit at her eyes and began to stream down. She never thought her life would end this way, and surely not in the hands of someone she once called a friend. The sound of the air was harsh, it was loud, it pounded her head, only getting heavier with speed as they descended. But then as soon as it started, it ended.

They came to an abrupt halt as the beast latched onto the slate ledge, pulling herself up to their destination. Adalia didn't dare to move, she stayed clinging for her life, expecting more to come.
