Description:

Shay is a young man who possesses a lithe yet muscular triangular frame and overall mesomorphic build. He’s an agile figure through and through, regarded as being deceptively thinner than he actually is. In terms of his skin coloration, Shay is nothing shy of holding the shade of a porcelain ivory. Far from sickly, his cooler undertones complement his fair skin, and he is not without the capability of holding a warmer tint to his complexion when exposed to the sun. His hair is a unique and natural blend of darker golds, soft browns, and lighter champagne colored highlights. With a variety of wispy strands that tend to lie over his forehead, none fall past his eyebrows, nor does the place in which these hairs spill ever remain quite the same. Its cut remains relatively short, though most especially in the back. As for eyes, Shay’s are a rich hazel that are comprised of a delicate yet chaotic blend of browns, greens, and gold. His hazel kaleidoscopes are framed by dark lashes that are both long and hold a soft upward curve.

Voice Claim:

Zed of Phantom City

Personality:

Anomalous. Complex. Paradoxal. A few words that best describe a young man whose scope of personality cannot be so easily defined or summarized. It’s not that Shay is someone recklessly unpredictable, but it is impossible to understand where his thoughts and feelings truly lie behind his calculating eyes. He’s a man who wears confidence well, shameless in expressing his thoughts and opinions when he chooses to humor those around him with his insight. Even while understanding him is a mental game of whiplash waiting to happen, he is rather forward, shockingly so. Whether or not his forwardness is tainted with ulterior motives or not is another story, but if Shay likes someone, they will know. If he does not like someone, they too, will very much know. He generally does what he wants when he wants, indulges himself shamelessly, and seeks convenient pleasures.

It can be nothing less than mental gymnastics to verbally engage with Shay as well, something the media knows too well - he speaks rhetorically, with the kind of sarcasm that is difficult to discern, and offers thought-inducing comments that reflect his sophisticated and educated upbringing. He is also someone whose lifestyle has always revolved around the rich and famous, and he has no guilt or empathy toward anyone of lesser and humbler circumstances. Similar to his indifference toward lesser standings, he does not tolerate mediocrity - not in anyone around him, and most certainly not in himself. No one can come down harder on Shay than himself, but even so, he does not struggle with the weight of pressure or suffer any forms of anxiousness. Rather, he seeks to find his limitations and break them, pushing himself almost to a degree that's barely human and relentlessly at that.

As a hockey player, Shay does nothing on the ice or for his team halfway. When he commits, it is unyielding - whether it be to a play, getting in a revenge hit, or building himself up into being a better overall player. He’s loyal both to those he shares a jersey with and the cause. His dedication to his career and fellow men on the ice does not mean he is gentle with them, though. He does not coddle or offer compliments and praise where they are not deserved. Generally, he regards and treats the players around him with the same degree of expectations and harshness he holds himself to - respect is earned, winning requires fighting for it, and it's vital to know ones place in the machine of the team.

Hockey Skills:

Shoots:

Left

Position:

Skill Forward

Current League Status:

NHL - Active (2nd Season)

Current Team:

Santa Fe Roadrunners (Signed to a 3-year entry-level contract)

Jersey Number:

23

Play Style:

Two-way Forward

While Shay had primarily belonged to the Sniper category of forward play style in his NCAA year, he specifically focused on adapting and evolving his strengths into being utilized as not only a highly skilled offensive player, but a capable defenseman. Able to play on both ends of the ice with equal efficiency, Shay is regarded as a player with a high hockey IQ, fast-paced and explosive energy, a reliable puck shooter, promising instinct, and touted for being a young man who plays a ‘200 foot’ game.

These qualities stalled into more inconsistent gameplay and scoring points at the end of his prior season, and while he made notable contributions to plays, he just couldn’t lift himself out of whatever invisible obstacle kept him from meeting the high expectations he entered the league with. In response to that lackluster ending, he vowed to solely focus on improving his game in the off-season and intends to enter his sophomore year as an NHL player with more promise than when he first entered the league.

Player Strengths:

• Elite Two-Way Playstyle
• Creative Puck Skills
• Hockey IQ
• Shot Accuracy/Speedy Release
• Level-headed Under Pressure
• Quality Skating
• Responsible Stickhandling/Draws Few Penalties
• Clutch Performer

Player Weaknesses:

• Impatience
• Over-pursues Defensively
• Gets Too Fancy On His Feet
• Inconsistent Scoring
• Overhandling/Risk Management
• Not Physically Imposing (Shorter Term Weakness)
• Negligent of Limitations/High Risk of Burnout

Rituals & Celly:

Shay’s only pre-game ritual is enjoying a Diet Coke while putting his gear on from left to right. As for his celly, it depends on the goal he makes on net. Standard goals, he doesn’t react much to anything outside of the occasional point towards anyone who helped him with an assist. When it comes to goals made on power plays or overtime, he breaks out a showy ‘heartbreaker’ celly.

Player History:

• Attended Yale Hockey Academy - consequently turned down a WHL team's offer when he graduated, which was viewed as an arrogant decision

• Opted in to play for Boston University’s hockey team in the NCAA division - Acquired the Hobey Baker and National Rookie of the Year Awards in his one year of play

• Went as the first overall draft pick to the Santa Fe Roadrunners

• Played for Team Canada in the World Junior Championship - while this forced him to be away from his NHL team for a short time in the middle of his debut season, many speculate that whatever unfolded behind the scenes for the silver-winning rookie is what led to the stalled ending of his first NHL season

Personal History:

• Fifth born of six children in the Buonaparte family - a family name well-known for producing generations of exceptionally talented individuals in the sports, entertainment, and medical fields

• Well-rounded Athlete - experience in hunting, ice fishing, archery, snowboarding, golf, fútbol, basketball, and while not a sport, can play the viola

• Known to date high-profile individuals - Shay's last publicly known relationship ended at the end of last season with a well-known Swedish model when he determined the relationship with her to be a 'distraction he could not commit to'.

• Knows nothing less than keeping up with the lifestyle of the rich and famous, born with a silver spoon, and is the favored Buonaparte child by his mother's French-Swedish lineage of equally wealthy and powerful individuals.

• Shay travels a lot. Not only with his team during a standard season, but throughout it and during the off-season to attend various galas, ceremonies, and social calls that revolve around the active lifestyles and happenings within his own family, both immediate and extended. His media coverage is sparse across continents, and it makes him a constant figure for both praise and ridicule, to which he is generally indifferent.

• Unlike most younger players who rely on living with host families, veteran players, or living together to save money, Shay lives comfortably in his own luxury vacation home, with the annual rent paid for by his grandfather on his mother's side as a part of his draft-day gift

Immediate Kin:

Henri Buonaparte - Father - 58 y/o - Neurosurgeon

Anne-Marie Deslinières-Buonaparte - Mother - 55 y/o - Former Pentathlon Canadian Gold-Medal Olympian

Anders Buonaparte - Eldest Brother - 34 y/o - Atlantic Division NHL Defenseman

Louis Buonaparte - Elder Brother - 23 y/o - Oscar-Nominated Actor

Strengths
Callum is nearly unstoppable on the ice, he moves on it like a fish in water. He leans towards fast in terms of speed, even if he isn’t quite considered the fastest. His face off proficiency is unmatched, and that was the first thing that people noticed when he played in the Olympics. His accuracy with the puck is uncanny too, almost like he can do it without looking. He is better known as a highly skilled offensive player, with powerful plays. He can read the ice quickly, however isn’t as good of a defensemen. He is still a phenomenal defensemen, however his defense skills are no match for his offensive skills.

His offensive stats always look better than his defensive, and his scoring ability is powerful. One of his greatest talents is when a teammate will pass the puck to him when they are near the net, and just as the puck connects with the stick, he can flick it straight into the net. He loves to play to shoot and score points, however he can be a team player. Callum knows when to let one of his teammates score, and has been known to even set his teammates up to score.

He is most known for his powerful attacks, and while he is very good at avoiding fights, he can get very aggressive on the ice while knowing where the line is. His agility and balance are incredible too, and he can cut a sudden 180 with ease. His hand-eye coordination is deadly accurate, and he trains often to maintain it.
Weaknesses
Since Callum is better and more honed for offensive play, playing defense can get a little tricky sometimes. He has a bad habit of leaving gaps sometimes, and gets more focused on trying to get the puck back then defending all aspects. His focus can get too focused on the puck, which makes him forget to watch for where other players can be. He also gets tunnel vision when he gets close to the net, when he has the puck, and is close to the net, he wants to score. He can set his teammates up, but if he’s within a certain range of the net, he forgets his teammates and narrows down to scoring.

When games get too slow, he gets impatient and twitchy, making him play a little more aggressively. Callum thrives in the chaos, when he is on the ice, he has to go, go go. One of his greatest weaknesses is his backhand. His quick flicks on the forehand are deadly and accurate. However, when he is forced to backhand, his accuracy drops, and those who notice this have exploited it. Slapshots are also a weakness, when he hits it right, the result is deadly. However, more often than not he doesn’t enjoy using it. It doesn’t feel right, so he often overthinks it and his accuracy goes down.

Another problem is bouncing pucks, most of the time he can recover. But a good amount of times, even the slightest bounce can knock him off. Since he often is already in motion to move the puck forward as it comes to him, the slightest inconsistency can throw him off. Another problem is bigger, heavier opposing centers. He is decently sized and powerful, but there are occasionally bigger and more powerful centers. It becomes the biggest problem when there are net-front battles. He does have a physical limitation, which is his old shoulder injury that can sometimes flare at the worst possible moments, causing him to miss shots or passes. However, he has been attending a lot of physical therapy to work on it.

Physical Appearance
Callum stands at a strong six feet tall, although most people assume he’s taller, and he weighs around 197lbs. While his build is proportional to his height and weight, it is clear he is athletic. He has a solid frame, without being bulky, as he is built for explosiveness and stamina. He has powerful shoulders and chest. However, his greatest muscle revolves around his forearms, wrists, and core for grip strength, powerful wrist flick based moves, and core stability. While his lower body is not as powerful, he still works on them so that he can maintain a good balance for agility. While he is right hand dominant.

Callum has slightly curly hair that is styled in a lower taper fade, with short, smooth sides that slowly fade near the ears and neck that has thick curls left longer at the top. Although, oftentimes it looks messy because he likes to run his hand through it, especially when he is stressed. He has striking ice blue eyes that can be compared to the winter sky just before snowfall. When he is angry or intimidating, they are cold, cutting blue like frozen steel, beautiful but unforgivable. When he is happy or showing his softer size, they seem to soften to a gentle blue that brightens and seems to thaw when he smiles. Callum’s skin tone is olive-toned, subtle with earthy sun-warmed skin, and seems to be evenly tanned across his skin (possibly from nude sunbathing). He prefers to remain almost clean-shaven, most often sporting a shadow of a stubble, just enough to add definition to his face.

Some distinguishing features of his are the freckles on his face. They are hard to see, except when the sun hits them just right. They are a light smatter across his cheekbones. He also has a slight dimple in his right cheek when he gives a genuine smile. While Callum also sports his fair share of scars, most of them from hockey and childhood shenanigans. He also has one on his jaw from one of his few fights on the ice, a thin one from his jaw towards his chin. He also has a shoulder scar from a hockey incident that nearly ended his career before it even began. It is a faint, pale slightly puckered scar over his right shoulder from a collision.

He is always seen wearing a silver necklace with a small silver cross on it, it is a family heirloom that he is very fond of. On the ice, he is most commonly found in the standard hockey uniform with padded shoulders and elbow guards. Of course, he has hockey pants, shin guards, gloves, and skates. His helmet (with the visor) often has a few of his jet black curls peeking out from underneath and he fidgets a lot more than he realizes when he is not in motion. He likes to chew on his mouthguard, yet when he is in action, he is precise and remarkably focused. For casual wear, he loves jeans and joggers (usually joggers), and can most often be found in sports wear since he likes to work out. He also likes t-shirts, and when it gets chilly, he adds hoodies in neutral tones.

When he is at a social/formal event for public press, hockey events, etc. he has two different fits, which often depends on how formal the event is. If it is casual formal, he is often in nice jeans with neutral or dark colored flannels. However, if it is form he is in a dark color tailored, slim-fit suit, complete with dress shoes. He prefers to leave the first few buttons of the white dress shirt unbuttoned. If he is out of the suit jacket, the sleeves are usually rolled up to reveal his forearms. He sometimes adds a watch to seem fancy, but usually forgets it. His game-day fit is somewhere between casual and nicer, sporting a nice top of some kind that sports the team’s color or logo with nice jeans or athletic pants. His voice is slightly deep with a tint of smoothness and richness. He usually remains quite calm and authoritative. However, he lightens up when he is teasing or being playful. His Scottish accent is heavy enough to tell that he is from Scotland, however people can still understand him without too much struggle.

Personality
On the outward appearance, usually public appearances, he remains calm and collected. He is very hard to rattle and likes to remain professional. His answers are typically thoughtful and careful, and his private life has remained incredibly private. He does not like to be vulnerable, nor does he want people to know too much about him. He does know how to play right into the media’s hands though as he can be slightly playful and witty to entertain, amuse, and charm. He also can be considered the ideal athlete and can lean a little on the cocky side.

His softer side that is usually visible for close friends and family only, sometimes for teammates, makes him seem much more approachable and likable. He is loyal to a fault to those that he loves and is incredibly protective. While he avoids fights, he is not afraid to start one for his teammate (under the condition that it is a valid reason). He is more emotionally vulnerable, he can express himself better. While his smiles and laughter become more common and more genuine. His love language is touch (which is ironic since he usually hates physical contact with people who are not his family). He most often does touching, quiet gestures (remember little details, listening, etc.).

Overall, he is also resilient and persistent. He does not give up easily, in fact, even when he had a career threatening injury. He is also uncanningly intelligent and strategic, making him a quick thinker on the ice. He is also observant and his instincts are highly developed for hockey.

However, Callum is not without his fair share of weaknesses and flaws. He is a bad overthinker and can drown in it, as he worries he’s not living up to the right images. And he often bottles things up, it is very hard for him to open up emotionally. For example, he has never told anyone how much his father’s death actually affected him. Anxiety is also a big problem for him; his old injury bothers him more often than he’s comfortable with (or comfortable with admitting) and anytime the same situation starts to arise again, he gets antsy. It is hard to tell, since he fidgets a lot in general, but he fidgets with his hands, gets tense, and his eyes seem to get colder. He has a bad habit of isolating himself, especially during emotional turmoil.

Callum can have an extremely bad temper whenever people tip him over. Thankfully, it is very hard to piss him off, since he is so good at bottling things up and remaining very calm. However, he can get mean, not violet but very mean. He can be a little bit of a perfectionist in his life, which adds more stress to him, because he feels like he has to be perfect and live up to everybody’s expectations of him. He is scared of losing people, which is one reason he doesn’t like to form emotional connections.

A couple of Callum’s strengths involve mental resilience. Even though on the inside and in private moments, he can spiral. In the public, he can handle pressure and criticism and it can be hard to unnerve him. He is a strategic thinker with exceptional awareness on and off the ice. While he is built to be a center, and does it phenomenally, he has also adapted and learned to combine strength, agility, and balance to further himself.

Brief History
His father was a hockey player when he was a kid, however never went past college. Magnus did play in a lot of clubs and when Callum got old enough, he started teaching his son. Then when Callum not only showed a strong interest in hockey, but an incredible raw talent, Magnus and Isla enrolled him in everything hockey. Callum has played since before elementary school, and has fallen in love with the sport since he was a kid.

When he hit his sophomore year of high school, coaches and scouts started coming to watch him play, and he even got a few interviews with some of them. Causing him to consider playing for his home country in the Scottish National League, however, during the winter break in his junior year his family moved them to Las Vegas. Where he, thankfully, got to continue playing hockey and even got a full athletic scholarship to college. He did graduate from high school early, and progressed through college quickly. He played for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (Skatin’ Rebels) in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I.

In his last year of college, he was invited to play in the Olympics for Team Great Britain (since Scotland did not have an official Olympic team). He was one of the youngest to play in the Olympics. His age and his skills skyrocketed into the public’s eye where once he returned from the Olympic’s, began receiving offers. However, in the end, he went as the first overall draft pick to the Santa Fe Roadrunners.

Relationships
Magnus Fletcher
Father. Dead. He and Callum were incredibly close, his father was the one who taught him to play hockey. The unexpected death of his father hit him hard.
Isla Fletcher
Mother. Alive. She and Callum are incredibly close, and they rely on each other heavily, especially after the passing of his father.

"Yes, I'm about to leave now."

Callum answers his mother in Scottish Gaelic, as he balances his phone between his ear and his shoulder. He's currently dressed in black joggers and a black sleeveless compression shirt. He was attempting to tug on some shoes, but his mother wanted every little detail. Not that Callum minded, he adored his mother, and the two were incredibly close. He gives up and puts the phone on speaker and places it on the counter. He was supposed to be at the arena in less than an hour, and he lived a decent way out of town that it would take about fifteen minutes. He wanted to get there early too.

"I have to go meet the coaches in person. Then I have to meet the team, do something called mornin skate, then go to practice. Then tonight, I'm supposed to go to team dinner."

Callum finally gets his shoes on, and snags a black hat that sported the Sante Fe Roadrunners, putting it on backwards. Outfit complete, he picks the phone back up and presses it against his ear again, listening to his mother ramble. The two have always been incredibly close, but since the passing of his father, the two had gotten even closer and he kept his mother updated frequently. It also helped that she lived only about five hours away, in Flagstaff, Arizona. Which, was still an unfortunate drive, but it wasn't the worse drive every. Sometimes he could cut the drive down to four hours if he drove a little faster.

"I promise to keep you updated, yes, okay, okay. I love you too, bye Mom."

He waits for the beep before sliding his phone into his pocket as he heads for the door, grabbing the backpack sitting by the door, and then his keys. He takes a deep breath, and glances at the picture of him and his father that hung on the wall. It was from high school, right before his father passed. He'd just finished his last game in high school and had already signed to play on a free ride athletic scholarship to University of Las Vegas-Nevada. They looked so happy, so unprepared for the sudden decline in health. Callum whispers, "Air do shon, Dad." (For you, Dad). Then he walks out, locking the door behind him.

Fifteen minutes later, he's parked in the team-only parking lot. Looking up at the massive stadium. The team was relatively new compared to most of the other teams, but they had done well for themselves. He could see the banners that broadcasted their wins and awards so far. And the massive digital broadcaster was showing pictures of the team, with their number and position. His eye catches on the name and picture of Shay Buonaparte. Shay was pretty popular in the NHL, the Canadian forward had been number one pick in the draft last season. Callum rubs his face, as he gets out of his truck. Here we go.

With the backpack slung over his one shoulder, he follows the instructions sent to him in email by the head coach. Mateo Grayson. As soon as he enters the arena, he finds himself in the back halls of the arena. Ah, this must lead to all the offices, gyms, locker room, and other amentities for the team. He rounds the corner, and found himself face to face with Mateo Grayson and Leo Rodriguez, the defensive coach. He comes to a stuttering halt, "Sorry." Mateo studies him, "You must be Callum Fletcher." Callum manages a smile, "Yes sir." Rodriguez glances at his watch, "You're about twenty minutes early, Fletcher."

Callum shifts his weight from one foot to the other, "I like to be early, sir." Rodriguez nods, "Good, good." Grayson grunts, "Well, the coaches just gathered in one of the meeting rooms, so why don't you come and meet them. Then me and you will go to my office to go over some final things. You'll go meet the team, go to morning skate, and then join practice." Callum nods, "Yes, sir. But, um, what is morning skate?" Grayson smirks, "It's every newcomer's favorite tradition, kid." Callum blinks once, then twice, as the two coaches head off. He takes his hat off, runs a hand through his hair, and then tugs it back on, leaving it on backward before he hurries after the coaches.

Oh gosh, as he rounds the corner, the meeting room had a window so he could see the coaches gathered. Rodriguez had already gone in, but Grayson was waiting outside, "You ready, kid?" Callum takes a deep breath, "Yes sir." He follows Grayson inside, where the next ten minutes turn out better than he expected. It was a lot of introductions, shakinghands, a little bit of saying whatever made the coaches happy. Well, it wasn't like he was lying, but they kept asking questions that he wasn't expecting. But, he took them in stride and responded calmly.

Finally the meeting is over, and the coaches flood out, leaving just Grayson and Callum. "Alright, let's go to my office. There is just some more paperwork that you have to fill out, but it isn't anything too crazy, since you did the official signing earlier." Grayson stands, snagging his backpack, "Sounds good." And sure enough, the paperwork wasn't bad, it was more or less just the medical stuff, and liability. Grayson nods as he gathers the paper, placing a paper clip on them to keep them together before placing them in a folder labeled Fletcher, Callum. "The rest of the team should be in the locker room, getting ready for practice. They know you're coming." Callum follows Grayson as the coach stands.
