My present to you. Merry Christmas <3
.
Rose took Teren's words as personal failure. Now more than ever, she felt as if she needed to be perfect. And he had corrected her, which meant her answer wasn't perfect. Teren was indeed right, self-defense is an acceptable form of violence. Though as he continued to speak, Rose found herself mildly surprised. This was the first time he had spoken so much. Still, she wasn't about to answer him. Not when she didn't even know the answer herself. The young woman hadn't bothered keeping up with what the ranch taught, so now that she was a mentor, she was really just winging it. And shutting down anything negative seemed like something she should do. But maybe she was overkilling it? Rose made a mental note to ask her dad later about the ranch's teachings and policies.
.
As Teren turned to glare at her, Rose barely bit down a nervous laugh. Ah, yeah, she should've expected such a reaction. Honestly she was grateful he had opted to only glare at her instead of lashing out or doing anything worse. She quickly dropped her hand, almost as if she had been burnt. But now her pulse wasn't only racing with fear, but with confusing feelings she wished she could shove back down again. Now, when Teren glared at her, she also saw the boy she had been mesmerized with as a kid. His name calling only drove the image home. Back then, Teren had been one of the few around her age. It didn't help that he was objectively attractive. So, in order to cope with the stress, she had latched onto him. Now Rose was struggling to separate her past feelings from the reality of everything else pressing down on her.
.
The young woman didn't have the energy to reply to the boy, so as he looked away, she did too. Not that she had really been looking at him - at best she only caught his eye for a second before darting away again, and repeating the process. A dodge a weave, if you will. Her eyes had passed over his face a hundred times without landing on anything concrete. But as she looked away, her eyes finally stilled, locking onto the path leading up to the stables. If only she could just run right now and not have to deal with all this stress. Maybe she could flee to a different country, where her uncle couldn't reach her and she'd be free from anything remotely connected to her past. Her fingers tightened on her lunchbox, her knuckles whitening slightly under the pressure as she listened to Teren.
.
At first Rose couldn't respond. Not when her chest tightened, not as it felt impossible to force even a sigh from her throat. Was she trying too hard? Is this all pointless? But then... As she thought about Teren being locked up for real, all the effort in the world didn't seem like enough. Whether she disliked her own feelings toward the boy or not, she knew she would regret not trying. Would regret not giving it her all to help the boy. "I understand." Rose murmured quietly, her head tilting back so that her gaze met the clouds in the sky. "But I'm not going to give up." For a moment, the scaredy-cat Rose was gone, replaced by the steely determination her uncle had taught her was crucial for being a good leader.
.
Rose still had her problems - she probably would always struggle to even look at her mentee. But now she was ready to fully embrace helping Teren. Rose's mom was the light that guided her out of the darkness, and now she would be that light for the young man. "I know you'll fight me every step of the way, but I'll keep trying, no matter what you throw at me. So, get ready to be annoyed, because starting now I'm going to be your perfectly imperfect mentor." A small, hopeful smile pulled at Rose's lips. It would be hard, sure, but maybe this whole situation was a blessing in disguise. Maybe all this stress was a good thing. Maybe it would all amount to something, in the end.
.
Teren is like a wild horse, Rose thought. He might act out, hurt people, run away. But underneath everything, he's probably just scared, and all he needs is a firm but gentle and patient hand to guide him out of the mud he's got himself stuck in. At least, that was a metaphor that made her feel more confident in being his mentor. Standing up, Rose climbed down the tree, trusting Teren to follow her. But as her feet touched the ground, her leg gave out, causing her to stumble a bit. Ah, the awkward Rose is back. It was nice while it lasted.

“I understand.”

Two particular words Teren hadn’t been inclined to expect from Rose, nor were they ones that he fully believed. Did she really understand? The idea was more incomprehensible than plausible to him. The young woman continued speaking with a display of equal determination as he was stubborn. Admirable from afar, but something that made him more coiled internally. Maybe as defense, maybe in irritation to the thought of an open challenge. She finished it with a smile that didn’t affect the straight line of his lips or still gaze. Though he did find a distinct shade of seriousness shadowing Rose’s expression. “That’s an awful lot of ambition for having only dealt with me for a few hours,” Teren mused, not exactly unkindly. It wasn’t an admission he would go out of his way to make her life hard, but it certainly wasn’t a concession to the possibility he might either.

When Rose began to rise, Teren had wiped his face diligently of anything that could have lingered on it before packing up what he had brought up. The male had stood at the top of the tree, watching as Rose climbed down before he even attempted to follow. A clumsy wobble followed Rose’s dismount that didn’t go unnoticed from where he had remained observing, which only encouraged him to roll his eyes before making his own descent down the tree. Hitting the ground with a small jump, he clutched the lunchbox in casual tow despite how unfitting it looked to be held by someone of his appearance’s caliber.

“I’m already annoyed,” Teren had chosen to say on the ground, his tone more commentary than barbed despite the words he spoke to the young woman in front of him. “Whether you’re intentionally trying to annoy me-” he approached, unafraid of stepping into what could have been her physical boundary to tilt his head down at her and simultaneously lift the lunchbox she had given him with a single finger. Just to express that he knew it had been a minor act of some kind of purposeful retribution. “Or not.” He added, lowering it without making an effort to leave her space that he occupied with the intent of presence, versus in an attempt to be threatening.

“I’ll tolerate your perfect imperfection until it does more than annoy me, though, mentor,” Teren added with a thoughtful regard of his gaze, moving forward after a few seconds were lost to time as his frame took a near enough pass by to threaten bumping her shoulder without actually doing so. Playing nice enough was the only real name to the game he had to play here, though. Maybe her determination was more of a tool, maybe it would be more of a thorn in his side - he wasn’t sure which side this coin would land on. That’s the thought that occupied him as his gait led him toward the direction of the house he didn’t need Rose’s assistance with in terms of guiding.

Rose glanced back at Teren as his voice reached her ears, pausing her walk back to the house. A nervous smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She had expected him to shut down to some extent after she had practically challenged him. But now he was telling her his feelings? However, she couldn't fully process what that meant, because she suddenly found that her space was being invaded. A lump quickly formed in her throat, and though she tried to swallow it down, it seemed she would forever be doomed to drown in emotion when she was around Teren. Rose's eyes briefly flicked down to the lunch box he was gesturing too, but in all honesty the stupid box was the least of her worries. Right now she was much more concerned with how close Teren was. Yet she didn't move, didn't back away in a panic. Rose tilted her head up, trying to seem confident even if that couldn't be farther from the truth. Or perhaps, she didn't want to move away. Perhaps she liked him being close, even if it only made everything worse.
.
Teren wasn't even trying to be intimidating, but to the young woman just his presence alone was enough to overwhelm her, especially with the new found knowledge that he was actually the boy she had been obsessed with as a little girl. Rose watched as he walked past her, their shoulders narrowly missing impact. The moment she knew he wasn't looking at her, she immediately deflated. Her hand flew up to her chest, feeling the way her heart thudded against her ribcage. This was bad. But she wouldn't give up. A second later, Rose had regained her questionable composure and turned to catch up with the young man. She lengthened her strides, making sure she eventually ended up by Teren's side as they headed back to the house. Rose didn't know what the next few weeks of her life would like, but she knew one thing. It was going to be one crazy ride.
~~~
Rose had spent the night tossing and turning, her mind filled with thoughts of Teren, her own past, and her current predicament. She was determined to help Teren, she just didn't know how the heck she was going to go about that. Still, despite her slight exhaustion the next morning, the moment she stepped outside, all her problems were temporarily forgotten. It was an extremely nice day, with a slight wind blowing through the ranch. Today would be one of the last days of nice weather, as winter cooled everything off. There was a slight chill in the air, but otherwise it was the perfect day for outside activities. A perfect day to start Teren's work with the horses. Although Rose just wanted to hop on and go for a ride, she knew from the day before that the boy seemed uncomfortable around the horses. Which meant she would need to take the time to help Teren feel at ease around the animals. She didn't want to push and end up ruining his perception of the beasts, so she had already come up with a plan the night before to help him acclimate.
.
It wasn't long before the duo was heading to the barn. Rose had a pep in her step, clearly excited to share her world with Teren, even if she knew he likely wouldn't be fond of the horse world. But she could make him love it, right? Rose pushed open the barn doors, happily inhaling the scent of the horses. She knew the smell wasn't for everyone, but to her it was like home. Rose headed to her horses's stall, happily greeting them with pats and kisses. Without turning around, she addressed the boy. "Today, we're just going to let you get used to the horses. The riding and stuff can wait for now." Rose turned around, smiling brightly at the boy, doing her best to push down any feelings that weren't connected to the mission at hand: getting Teren comfortable. "Our first task is grooming. I'll show you how on Honey, and then you can do it on one of the school horses." With that said, Rose led Honey out of her stall, getting the mare set up in the cross ties. The young woman got out her grooming supplies, leaving them on a nearby bench. She gestured Teren over, making sure he didn't get to squeak by without paying attention.
.
"This is called a curry comb. You use it to loosen up all the dirt and stuff from their coat." Rose murmured, showing Teren a black rubber, oval shaped brush. She pressed it to Honey's coat, moving the brush in circular motions against the horse's side. "All you have to do is go around and around like this. See?" Rose then continued to show Teren the other steps to properly grooming a horse, including using a stiff dandy brush, soft brush, and comb to detangle their mane and tail. Once she finished, she flashed the boy another smile. "You're turn. Ready?" Rose moved over to the right side of the barn, contemplating which horse to assign to Teren. In the end, she picked Valentino, a sorrel quarter horse gelding. "This is Valentino. He'll be the horse you work with during your time here. He's super relaxed, if a bit lazy, so you don't need to worry about anything with him." She lead him out of his stall, tying him in the cross ties in front of Honey. Rose then turned to Teren, handing him the curry comb, waiting expectantly. "If you need any help or have questions, I'll be right here."
